Day-by-day itinerary

Day 1 — 🇳🇴 Oslo

Day 1: Welcome to Oslo Your Norwegian adventure starts as soon as you land in Oslo. Make your way to your centrally located hotel, where your room and travel pack are waiting. You'll get tickets, maps and our own list of places we love in each stop along the route. Oslo is compact and easy to walk, so you can start exploring as soon as you've dropped your bags. If you have energy left after the flight, walk down to the Aker Brygge waterfront, where old shipyard buildings now hold seafood restaurants and outdoor terraces. A little further along, the white marble Opera House slopes right down into the fjord, and you can walk up its roof for sunset views over the harbour and the islands. In summer it stays light late into the evening, so there's no rush. Finish the day with a relaxed dinner by the water. Overnight: Oslo

    Day 2 — 🇳🇴 Oslo

Day 2: Discover the Capital You have a full day to see Oslo your way. It's a green, relaxed capital where the fjord, the forest and modern architecture sit side by side. Start in Frogner Park, home to the Vigeland installation, more than 200 bronze and granite figures by sculptor Gustav Vigeland showing every stage of human life. It's free to enter and open around the clock. In the afternoon, take the short ferry to the Bygdøy peninsula, the city's museum district. The Fram Museum holds the original polar ship used on expeditions to both the Arctic and the Antarctic, and you can go on board. Nearby, the Norwegian Folk Museum brings together historic farmhouses and a medieval stave church in a large open-air park. If you prefer art, the Munch Museum on the harbourfront has the world's largest collection of Edvard Munch's work across 13 floors. For time on the water, a short sightseeing cruise among the small islands of the inner Oslofjord is a relaxing option. In the evening, try the lively Grünerløkka district, known for its independent cafés, bars and small restaurants. Overnight: Oslo

      Day 3 — 🇳🇴 Flåm

Day 3: Over the Mountains to Flåm Many travellers say this is the best day of the trip. After an early breakfast, board the Bergen Line, often called one of the most beautiful rail journeys in Europe. The train leaves the city behind and follows green river valleys past lakes, farms and red wooden houses. It stops in mountain villages such as Gol and Geilo, both popular in winter for skiing. The track then climbs above the tree line onto the edge of the Hardangervidda plateau, a wide, bare landscape of rock, snow patches and cold lakes. Near Finse, the highest station on the line at over 1,200 metres, there can be snow even in midsummer. Take a seat by the window and have your camera ready. At the mountain station of Myrdal, you change to the Flåm Railway. In about 20 kilometres it drops roughly 860 metres through tunnels cut into the rock, hairpin bends and deep, steep-sided valleys. The train stops briefly at the Kjosfossen waterfall so you can step out and feel the spray. Less than an hour later, you arrive in the small village of Flåm at the innermost end of the Aurlandsfjord. Check in and enjoy a quiet evening surrounded by mountains, perhaps with a local craft beer at the Viking-inspired Ægir brewpub. Overnight: Flåm

        Day 4 — 🇳🇴 Flåm

Day 4: A Free Day in Fjord Country Today there's no schedule. It's a whole day to enjoy one of the most beautiful parts of western Norway at your own pace. For something active, rent a kayak and paddle across the calm, mirror-like fjord, or join a guided tour if you're new to kayaking. For some speed, a RIB fjord safari takes you along the fjord in a high-speed open boat, and you might spot seals and goats on the cliffs. Don't miss the Stegastein viewpoint, a platform that juts out from the mountainside 650 metres above the Aurlandsfjord. The view down the fjord is one of the most photographed in Norway. You can get there by bus tour, or cycle and hike if you're feeling energetic. For a quieter day, visit the tiny village of Undredal, known for its goat cheese and its stave church, one of the smallest still in use in Scandinavia. Or follow the easy valley trail from Flåm to the Brekkefossen waterfall for fine views over the village. In the evening, try local dishes made with fjord salmon, lamb or cheese before an early night ahead of the next day's cruise. Overnight: Flåm

          Day 5 — 🇳🇴 Bergen

Day 5: Nærøyfjord Cruise and On to Bergen Pack your bags after breakfast and head down to the pier for a fjord cruise, one of the high points of the week. The boat sails out along the Aurlandsfjord, past small farms perched high on the mountainsides and waterfalls pouring straight into the water. It then turns into the Nærøyfjord, one of the narrowest fjords in Europe and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. At its tightest point the fjord is only about 250 metres wide, and the cliffs rise more than a kilometre on each side. Stay out on deck: the scenery changes at every bend. The cruise ends in the small village of Gudvangen, where a bus takes you through wild mountain scenery to the lakeside town of Voss. In summer, the route may include the dramatic hairpin bends near the Stalheim Hotel, with views down the whole Nærøy valley. From Voss, board the train for the last stretch along rivers and fjord arms to Bergen, arriving in the afternoon. Bergen, the "City of Seven Mountains," sits between steep green hills and the North Sea. After check-in, take an evening walk along the harbour and enjoy your first taste of Norway's second-largest city. Overnight: Bergen

            Day 6 — 🇳🇴 Bergen

Day 6: Explore Bergen You have a full day to get to know Bergen, a lively harbour city with a long trading history. Start at Bryggen, the old wharf with colourful, tilting wooden merchant houses from the Hanseatic period, now a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Wander the narrow wooden alleys behind the front row of buildings, where you'll find small galleries, craft shops and cafés. Next, visit the fish market at the head of the harbour to try local specialities such as smoked salmon, prawns and fish soup. Then take the Fløibanen funicular up Mount Fløyen. In a few minutes you'll be 320 metres above the city with a wide view over the rooftops, fjords and islands. Walk back down through the forest, or keep hiking the trails at the top. For an even higher view, the Ulriken cable car goes up the tallest of Bergen's seven mountains. In the afternoon, visit the KODE art museums by the Lille Lungegårdsvann lake, or join a guided food walk to taste modern Nordic cooking. Music lovers can take a short trip out to Troldhaugen, composer Edvard Grieg's lakeside villa, where summer lunchtime concerts are held in the concert hall next to the house. End your trip with a farewell dinner. Bergen is known for some of the best seafood in the country. Overnight: Bergen

              Day 7 — 🇳🇴 Bergen

Day 7: Farewell, Norway Enjoy a last breakfast and, if your flight is later in the day, one final walk around the harbour or a coffee in one of Bergen's cosy cafés. Your tour ends this morning, and you'll take home memories of mountains, fjords and railway views that are hard to beat anywhere. Bergen's airport is easy to reach and we can arrange a private transfer. If you're flying home from Oslo, or just want one more look at the mountains, add a return train journey across the country on the Bergen Line and see the scenery again from the other direction.
